Frequently Asked Questions About LED Lamps
LED lamp - what's inside?
Answer:
LED-lamp is a modern lighting device, in which LEDs are a light source. The lamp consists of a housing in which a printed circuit board with LEDs is located and the driver is an electronic circuit that ensures the correct operation of the LEDs. Outside, the LEDs are protected by light-scattering optical elements. To fix the lamp in the holder and supply power to it, it is equipped with a base.
How does an LED lampwork?
Answer:
The principle of operation of an LED lamp is based on the ability of an LED to create optical radiation when an electric current passes through it. When an electric current passes through a semiconductor crystal, part of the energy is converted into radiation visible to the eye. In LEDs, a semiconductor crystal produces blue spectrum light, therefore, to obtain white light, the crystal is coated with a phosphor - a special substance that converts blue radiation to white.
Who invented the LED lamps?
Answer:
The first modern LED with red radiation was developed in 1962 by American scientist and inventor Nick Holonyak, and in 1972, his student George Crawford managed to increase the brightness of red LEDs 10 times, as well as create the first yellow LED.
Modern LED lamps appeared only in the 90s. The twentieth century, when a group of Japanese researchers from Nichia Chemical Industries Corporation - Shuji Nakamura, Hiroshi Amano, and Isam Akasaki - invented the technology of manufacturing blue LEDs. Their industrial production began in 1993, and in 1996 the production of white LEDs was launched. Thus, a decrease in prices and an increase in the luminous flux of LEDs made it possible to begin a wide production of household lighting devices - LED lamps.
Why are LED lamps better than incandescent and CFL?
Answer:
The advantages of LED-lamps in comparison with incandescent lamps (LON) and compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) are undeniable. The main ones can be considered:
- long working life - the LED lamp lasts 30-50 times longer than LON, and 2-3 times longer than CFL;
- profitability - creating a similar light output in power, LED lamps to consume 10 times less electricity compared to incandescent lamps and 2 times less than CFLs;
- comfortable light - high-quality LED lamps do not flicker and do not pulsate, light up without delay and are able to work without flickering and ripple in a fairly wide range of input voltage;
- environmental friendliness - LED lamps do not contain mercury, do not emit ultraviolet or infrared rays and do not need special disposal conditions (like CFL);
- safety - during operation, high-quality LED lamps do not heat up to high temperatures (unlike LON), which increases the fire safety of LED lamps and prevents the occurrence of accidental burns.
Where to buy an LED lamp?
Answer:
Currently, it is very easy to buy an LED lamp: these lighting products are sold in any large supermarket, in construction stores, in markets, and in Internet stores. When buying an LED lamp, be sure to purchase a quality product from a reliable manufacturer. In addition, make sure that the seller has issued you a settlement document confirming the fact of the purchase of the goods, as well as a warranty card for the purchased product.
Is it possible to return LED lamps that did not fit?
Answer:
Can. In accordance with Art. No. 9 of the Law of Ukraine "On Protection of Consumer Rights", the buyer has the right to return serviceable LED lamps within 14 calendar days from the date of purchase. To do this, you must provide a document confirming the fact of the purchase of goods (receipt, check, etc.). It is also necessary that the returned lamps be working, have no signs of use or mechanical damage, and their packaging retains its presentation.
When will LED lamps get cheaper?
Answer:
They are already getting cheaper. When LED lamps first appeared in the Ukrainian market, their cost was really quite high, however, it decreases every year. This trend is due, first of all, to the constant optimization of production processes, the expansion of production scales and the reduction in the cost of LED technology. The combination of these factors affects the market for LED products, reducing the price of LED lamps.
Is it possible to dim LED lamps?
Answer:
Most LED lamps sold on the Ukrainian market are not designed to work with a normal household dimmer, because the principle of dimmer brightness control is based on the change (decrease) in the voltage of the mains supplied to the lamp. But the lamp driver, when the voltage changes, stabilizes the power parameters of the LEDs and therefore the brightness does not change.
For use with a dimmer, some manufacturers produce special series of dimmable lamps, the driver of which also stabilizes the power supply parameters of the LEDs during voltage fluctuations, but at the same time responds correctly to changes in the supply voltage of the lamp with a dimmer. In any case, before buying a dimmer and a lamp, you should carefully familiarize yourself with their technical specifications and compatibility.
Why is LED lamp warming?
Answer:
Like any electrical appliance, an LED lamp has an efficiency of less than unity, which means that part of the energy supplied to it is not converted into light, but is released in the form of heat, which leads to heating of the lamp.
Excessive heating can be a result of a violation of the operating conditions of the LED lamp, as well as errors made during the design of the lighting source or during its assembly. In addition, the cause of overheating may be the use of low-quality components for the manufacture of the lamp.
It should be understood that constant overheating very negatively affects the operation of the LED lamp since compliance with the temperature regime is one of the main factors affecting the parameters, reliability, and life of the light source. High temperature accelerates the degradation of LEDs and housing materials, which leads to mechanical destruction of the lamp components and reduces its service life.
Why is the LED lamp flickering?
Answer:
The presence of flickering in an LED lamp directly depends on the quality of the driver installed in it. With sharp voltage fluctuations in the network, a high-quality driver ensures the correct operation of the LEDs without changing the brightness, moreover, such a driver guarantees the absence of light pulsations harmful to humans and invisible to the eye. Lamps with a high level of ripple are not recommended, since such low-quality light negatively affects one's well-being, causes discomfort and increased fatigue.
Why are LED bulbs humming?
Answer:
The cause of the hum or squeak may be vibrations that occur when current pulses pass through the elements of the electronic components of the lighting driver. The intensity and pitch can vary depending on the temperature, operating mode, and driver load. Measures to eliminate possible noise are taken by lamp manufacturers even at the stage of driver design, so high-quality LED lamps of well-known brands, as a rule, work silently.
Can I fix the LED lamp on my own?
Answer:
The method of assembling LED lamps does not imply the possibility of their opening, and, accordingly, repair. In addition, the successful repair of such an electronic device is a task for a specialist. Opening the lamp housing is also not recommended because if the product has mechanical damage, including signs of disassembly, the lamp seller will most likely refuse warranty service.
What to do with LED lamps that fail?
Answer:
Since LED lamps do not contain mercury vapor, its compounds or other substances hazardous to the ecological balance, they do not need to be disposed of in a special way. Throwing a spent LED lamp into a regular container for solid household waste will not harm the environment, although it would be more appropriate to place it in a special container to receive this kind of raw material.
